Events Calendar Added to Website

Try this out.  Make your comments and suggestions.  We have some time to add more features before the 2019 season.

There is a new EVENTS menu added to the Metro Seniors Website.  This is a searchable and downloadable calendar of events that currently includes:

  • Weekly Tournaments information for all Division 1 – 5 for 2019
  • Special Events Scheduled for 2019
  • General and Board Meetings
  • Notices for registration opening for Special Events

Information on each event includes:

  • Title (example – D1 Wk 2  Course Name, or SE – event Course Name)
  • Description – summary information on the event
  • Venue information
    • Name, Address
    • Cost
    • Link to Google Maps
    • Organizer or leader where appropriate

The staring view is the current full month calendar.  To see other months simply click the next or previous month.  The events will show on the date with their Title.  Click on the event Title for full details of each event.

You can change the view to LIST to see the events in the current and following months.

Really powerful – the calendar is Searchable.  Click FIND and put in a keyword to search all calendar events.  For example, typing in Annbriar, will show all events at Annbriar (5 weekly tournaments).    Type in Shotgun to see all shotgun starts listed (30 total) plus all the Special Events. D1 will find all Division 1 weekly events, D2 – Division  2 and so on.

Use quotes to search for items with spaces – example “Wk 18” will find only the events listed for Week 18 – 5 events D1 – D5.   “D1 Wk18” will find only the event for Division 1 in Week 18.

In  MONTH View you will see the calendar for that specific month with the searched items.  In LIST View you will see the next 20 items starting with the month you selected in the Calendar.  Plus you can forward to the next 20, and next 20 and so on.

The Calendar is downloadable to GOOGLE Calendars.

Having a calendar of events on your website is great. Wouldn’t it be super awesome if you could get those events into a personal calendar as well?

How to Export Events

You’re in luck. The Events Calendar PRO includes a nifty option for you to export the events on your calendar in a flash. Visit your calendar and you’ll notice a button at the bottom.

Export Events Button

Click that button and it will download the events listed on the page as an .ics file.

If you’re wondering what the heck an .ics file is, it allows you to import events into a calendar application, like Apple’s iCal or Google Calendar. For example, here are the step-by-step instructions for importing an .ics file into a Google Calendar.

  1. Thanks Justin. Could be a interesting. We would need some research to outline the event, costs and commitments on anything like this.

Would you or a informal committee be interested in checking this out?

I had another organization approach Top Golf for an outing of about 50 people for a 2 or 3 hour event. The required commitments for a room, several stations, and a food package. Total costs approached $100 per head. They were also asking for a deposit. Possible that at a different day or time costs could be lower? They were not interested in “negotiating” on follow-up.

There are some golf simulators at local pubs. These are relatively inexpensive to rent by the hour ($35 to $40). A small group can play 18 holes in a couple of hours easily. This could also be a way to get in some off season practice.

Thanks for the idea. Special Events are set for 2019. See the calendar. We have run an early Spring event (First 100) in the past at Pheasant Run or Indian Hills. Interest has been falling in part due to course conditions and perhaps weather. SE Committee has been revising the mix to better meet interests overall.

We do have the Division 9 – 9 hole Tournaments weekly on Wednesday mornings at Riverside in Fenton. These start in mid-March and finish in mid-November. I play there as practice and have fun. I walk and play 18 holes for $12. Win a few bucks on occasion. Still going tomorrow and next week – use following web address for more information https://wp.me/P5TgNt-U

  3. Dan – good question. Short answer – only 1 “individual” format Special Event. Reasons – It seems as if the “individual” format events were more like our regular weekly tournaments, not really “special”. Turnout for the team events, even when SE Team formed the teams was higher. Events filled faster, and a waiting list.

Next opportunity – the Metro-Plus membership group will have all individual format tournaments. These are targeted to more competitive players who want a little more challenge. Courses for the most part will be more exclusive, more challenging, and a little higher priced than weekly tournaments. There will be an extra membership fee. We will be trying some different ideas on scoring, rules, operations. More information on Metro-Plus at the meeting next week and soon on the website.

  4. Craig – Thanks for the comments. I’ll have to check more on the export function. I had not checked the export function completely. Will check your issue.

Most important to me – using the LIST view with the FIND EVENT filter generates a GREAT summary view for individual divisions, individual courses, or Special Events.

As soon as I have an answer on export, I’ll post it on website and link to EVENTS page.
